Around July, a notice about the Student Astronomy Observation Festival arrived from the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute.

Our club members were already obsessed with collecting KASI merchandise, so we applied without hesitation.

Together with another teacher who loves astronomy, a total of 6 students from our school applied.

There were quite a few things to handle on the school's side like processing the official documents.

That part was greatly helped by the teacher who applied together.

1. From Gyeonggi-do to Sacheon KB Jineium

This Astronomy Observation Festival was held at KB Insurance Jineium Sacheon Training Center.

For those living in the metropolitan area, it was a tremendously long distance...

They arranged buses for each region in the metropolitan area, so we could travel comfortably.

The gathering place for the Gyeonggi area was Pungseng High School.

Our kids gathered at 5:40 in front of the school, rode with me and the accompanying teacher to Pungseng High School.

Everyone seemed tired and knocked out on the bus, and before we knew it, we were at a rest stop.

Stepping out for some air, I bought and ate a walnut snack.

2. Arrival and Lecture

After getting off the bus, we moved straight to the lecture room on the 3rd floor.

Inside, there were many other people participating in the training as well.

Our name tags had our names on the front and the schedule on the back.

Check the photo below for a rough schedule.

We took our seats and took some photos after arrival.

We arrived a little after 12, listened to a brief explanation about the progress, and then moved for lunch.

The food was delicious!

A good meal makes such outings even more energetic.

Hearing they were observing the sun outside, I took some photos of the interior while moving.

I wanted to take photos out at the sea, but time was tight, so we moved right away.

With the Hα filter, solar prominences were visible.

You can slightly see the prominences at the bottom right.

There was also a small café on the 1st floor.

I grabbed a coffee and moved back to the lecture room.

Kids introduced their clubs, and teachers gave lectures.

As a teacher, since I was there for student supervision, the lectures didn’t stick much, but the club presentations by the kids were very memorable.

One of our club students dreams of becoming an astronaut.

Hey... how about becoming a graduate student?

At night, we attended a lecture on AI telescopes.

The more I listened, the more I wanted to purchase the equipment.

I resolved to work hard and earn money.

3. Accommodation

Before going to night observation, we unpacked at the accommodation.

There was a huge lounge, arcade, and store on-site.

The study rooms were

locked for some reason.

I took a shot of the interior.

One of the rooms had a sea view, and I imagine the person with that room enjoyed it a lot.

4. Night Sky Observation

After dinner, we proceeded with the night sky observation.

We moved the equipment to the playground, turned on the lights, and turned them off once all teams arrived.

Even though it was cloudy enough for clouds to be captured on camera, the stars were clearly visible due to the absence of surrounding light pollution.

That day, I found the Ring Nebula by myself for the first time.

The kids actively searched for various objects and conducted activities.

5. After 9 PM

After 9 PM, it was free observation time.

Seeing the cloudy weather, we packed up the equipment and came inside, suddenly hearing it cleared up again.

We considered going out but decided to pack it in.

Facilities on B1 and 1F closed mostly by 11 PM.

And it was free.

After a short rest, I went down and found the kids having fun in the karaoke room on the first floor.

I think this kind of fun is also a reason to come back.

6. Aerospace Science Museum and Return

The next day, we visited the Aerospace Science Museum, had lunch, and returned home.

They said breakfast was provided, so I managed to get dressed and go out.

There were both Western and Korean options, and I enjoyed the meal.

The review of Sacheon Aerospace Science Museum and Museum is quite long, so please refer to the article below.

After the visit, we moved for lunch.

It was a place called Seonjinseong, and the meat was incredibly cheap.

Because of the sudden rush of customers, the gas stoves were not heating well, so the kitchen warmed the food for us.

Still, it tasted good.

After lunch, we moved to Pungseng Middle School, and from there, we moved to our school before dispersing.

7. Review

I have always dreamed of astronomy since I was young, but I wasn’t particularly interested in celestial observations or astrophotography.

This year, while doing the club activities, I believe the kids learned a lot, but I also think I gained insight into what I should focus on moving forward.

In terms of food, AI and coding are flashy fusion cuisine, but astronomy is like a classic slow-simmered bone broth.

I vow to pay more attention not only to astrophysics but also to observational astronomy.

Gyeonggi Earth Science Education Research Association Winter Field Trip to Yeoncheon – Reflections
This winter, the Gyeonggi Earth Science Education Research Association ran a self-directed training program in Yeoncheon that combined a geological field trip and astronomical observation. Last year, when they did the self-directed stargazing training at Jaein Falls, my second child suddenly came down with a fever so I couldn’t go, which really stayed with me. This time I was determined to join. The participation fee was 30,000 won. On top of that, it was possible to get school support for the expenses used for the self-directed training...

Sacheon Aerospace Museum, Museum Visit Review
We recently visited the aerospace museum during our astronomy observation camp. Here is the museum review I’m sharing. 1. Location: It’s about 10 minutes by taxi from Sacheon Bus Terminal, and about 25 minutes by bus or on foot. 2. Interior view: There was a long straight road inside, like an airplane runway. Surrounding it...

Visit to the Jo Gyeong-chul Observatory, a Milky Way Sanctuary
At the suggestion of a biology teacher who really loves astrophotography, we visited the Jo Gyeong-chul Observatory. I thought an observatory would be far from Seoul or Gyeonggi, but it was closer than expected. 1. Location Since it's about an hour's drive away, you can go whenever you want. On the way, beware of unpaved roads due to administrative issues between public institutions.
